Meet Ivan Houston, a 4th generation California native whose family left their mark on a little-known area of Los Angeles called West Adams, a once-thriving historical black neighborhood.โฃ
If you look for the location of West Adams today, you won't find anything but a broken legacy split apart by gentrification and a massive highway.โฃ
Ivan's grandfather, Norman Houston, was one of the first blacks in West Adams and once President of Golden State Mutual Company, the largest black-owned insurance company in California.โฃ
Ivan joined me in this episode to talk about West Adam's fascinating and groundbreaking history in African-American civil rights, his family's key involvement in this history, as well as Berkeley Square and Sugarhill's untimely demise in the wake of the 10 Freeway.โฃ
Tune in to hear stories about vision, effecting change, the Buffalo soldiers in Italy, and lots more.โฃ
