Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have existed since before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but for many years, only a select few have been widely known. And to Nicole Ford-Miller, our guest in this episode, that was an unfortunate oversight that had to be corrected.
Being an Altadena - California native, it was quite a shock when one of her friends discovered that Nicole had never stepped foot onto the University of Southern California campus. And no wonder. Nicole's passion for HBCUs was kindled by her family since childhood, both through her parents and her aunt. So there was never a question as to what kind of university she would attend. After her incredibly welcoming and amazing experience at an HBCU (Bethune-Cookman University), Nicole started an organization, Stepping in the Right Direction (STRD), to spread the word about these little-known options for the African-American community.
Tune in to find out more about Nicole's outstanding work in creating awareness about these universities. Maybe you might be one of those people who needs her support in taking that first step in the right direction.
